Jonathan Mongie, Winner: 2011 Villa Vittles Chicken

I was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1969, but spent the first 2 years of my life on St. John, due to my mother and father living there since 1965.

My father, Henry Mongie, has lived on St. John full time for over 45 years and continues to reside in Chocolate Hole.

Since then, I have been going down every year to visit my father. For the early years, it was all summer. Then it was Christmas breaks in later years. Now, it's whenever I can get down there.

My wife and I moved to St. John in 2003 and lived in Enighed next to perhaps the nicest people I’ve met, the beekeeper and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Small, for about 4 years, then moved back to Massachusetts.

We currently reside in South Dartmouth.

While we were down there, we built an apartment building on a small lot my Dad had and my wife was a hairdresser at Beauty in Balance, but then went on her own when Jennifer closed that shop.

We had 2 children while we were living there named Savannah, now 5 and Wyatt, now 3.

So, with that much history, you can see why St. John means so much to me.

I remember the shack bar at Gallows Point and the dirt road all the way to Chocolate Hole back in the day.

We have lots of great memories that will stay with us forever.
